As WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange prepares to make a public statement, sources close to him on Sunday said that an assurance by Sweden that he would not be extradited to the United States could be a way out of the current impasse over his extradition.
Mr. Assange faces allegations of sexual offences in Sweden, where Britain is committed to extradite him after all legal avenues in this country were exhausted.
Mr. Assange on Sunday completed two months holed up in the Ecuador embassy in London (he went in on 19 June).
Kristinn Hrafnsson, the only person other than Mr. Assange who is authorised by WikiLeaks to be a first point of contact for receiving sensitive information, is quoted in the Sunday Times as saying: “If the Swedish authorities give an assurance there won’t be an extradition and the UK authorities as well, that might go a long way in being a basis of negotiations”.
Mr. Assange is expected to make a statement in the on Sunday from balcony of the Ecuador embassy. So far Mr. Assange has offered to answer questions from Swedish investigators in London.
He is wanted in Sweden to answer accusations of rape and sexual assault.
Mr. Assange, who denies the claims, fears that once he is there the United States will seek his extradition for publishing 251,287 leaked U.S. embassy cables.
Britain has refused safe passage to Mr. Assange after Ecuador last week granted him ‘diplomatic asylum’, which is not recognised by Britain.

Democracy is Good, but in the absence of Truth or True knowledge, it can take a negative orientation. The tendency of evil is to hide in power centre. Thus religion and seats of power becomes their hide out and arena of functioning. When people are stressed by the their own wrong choices, there will be a period of uncertainty, frustration that take violent routes of suicide, terrorism and so on. However, Life force or consciousness and Truth predominates. We are seeing this phenomenon around the world, that is forcing the fall of dictators and evil rulers. It is inevitable that the whole system cleanses and changes from top to bottom. Evil cannot rule eternally. Democracy is designed for information and truth to unfold. This is the beauty of democracy. Democracy and the governing system needs to be understood from the living perspective. The system also needs evolution to plug the easy reentry of evil into power centers and hide under power.
Fair enough, the Wikileaks Founder is reasonable. The issue of Mr Assange's extradition cannot drag on; Britain and Sweden should negotiate with Ecuador and solve the problem. They should respect the human rights of Mr. Assange. Didn't the US pull out two of its agents accused of killing Pakistanis in broad day-light recently despite their doubtful diplomatic status? Why should Sweden extradite Assange to US?
