A powerful blast rocked the Sea View area of Karachi on Wednesday night when suicide bombers detonated themselves after being chased by the police. One policeman was killed and another injured in the blast that took place in a relatively deserted area of Pakistan's commercial capital.

According to Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wasan, the suicide bombers had been asked to stop their vehicle at a check post by the police. The bombers sought to flee the spot but when chased, detonated themselves in the Sea View area which is close to the upscale Clifton neighbourhood. All three people in the car - including a woman -- died in the explosion.

The Minister said the police had managed to avert a major tragedy as the suicide bombers were unable to execute their plan. One suicide vest remained undetonated and television footage showed the police trying to keep onlookers at bay.
