The Sudanese army says its forces have killed Khalil Ibrahim, the leader of the main Darfur rebel group, in an attack west of the capital Khartoum.

Ibrahim led the Darfur-based Justice and Equality Movement, or JEM, which did not join a peace deal with Khartoum.

The army statement, carried by the official SUNA news agency, says Ibrahim was killed early on Sunday in North Kordufan state, at Wad Banda, a town 440 miles (700 kilometres) west of the capital Khartoum.

It says Ibrahim was killed “with a group of his leadership.”

On Saturday, the army said the Darfur rebels attacked three areas in North Kordufan, killing an unspecified number of civilians.

The U.N. says 300,000 people have died in the government’s war on Darfur since 2003.
