North Korea’s Kim Jong Il has held talks with an Egyptian telecoms magnate whose company set up and operates an advanced mobile phone network in the impoverished communist nation.
North Korea’s state news agency reported on Monday that Mr. Kim met Orascom Telecom Chairman and CEO Naguib Sawiris on Sunday during his visit to the country.
The Korean Central News Agency said Mr. Kim “warmly welcomed” Mr. Sawiris’ visit “taking place at a time when Orascom’s investment is making successful progress in different fields.” KCNA said they “had a cordial talk” and Mr. Kim hosted a dinner.
Cairo-based Orascom Telecom launched a third-generation mobile network in North Korea in late 2008.
