Sri Lanka goes dark in nationwide blackout

An official says a power blackout plunged all of Sri Lanka into darkness for a few hours on Friday because of a technical fault at an electricity distribution centre.

A spokesman for the power and energy ministry says the blackout affected almost all parts of the Indian Ocean island nation for few hours early on Friday.

Spokesman Harsha Abeykoon says engineers found it was due to a technical fault at the main distribution center and a burnt cable connected to the national grid.

He says power has already been restored in some parts. Sri Lanka largely depends on hydropower to generate electricity.
