The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against fugitive BNP leader Tarique Rahman for calling country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman ‘Pakbandhu’ (Friend of Pakistan).

The court also asked the police to submit a report before it by January 29 on execution of the arrest warrant.

Speech in London Mr. Tarique Rahman has been making explosive remarks on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, particularly questioning Mujib’s historic role for Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan.

The case refers to Tarique’s November 7 speech at function in London, where he had said Sheikh Mujibur Rahman returned to Bangladesh ‘with a Pakistani passport’ in 1972 and took office as the President of Bangladesh. He had also then labelled the founding father of Bangladesh as ‘Pakbandhu’.

On an earlier occasion, he had claimed that his father Gen. Ziaur Rahman, an army Major in 1971, and not Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was Bangladesh’s first President.
