TNA to meet Indian leaders over 13th Amendment

Representatives of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) are likely to meet senior Indian leaders, reportedly to seek their intervention in ensuring that the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution is implemented.

TNA sources told The Hindu that a meeting was in the offing but was yet to be finalised. The TNA, an umbrella organisation of various political parties, is said to have a good chance to win the Northern

Provincial Council elections, which the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has promised to hold this September. Its decision to meet senior leaders in the Indian government comes in the wake of a series

of campaigns – by a group of Sinhala Buddhist organisations and certain political parties – in Sri Lanka seeking the dilution or abolition of the 13th Amendment that followed the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord of July 1987.

Local daily Ceylon Today on Thursday quoted TNA spokesman and Jaffna District MP, Suresh Premachandran, as having said that the visit to India would take place in the next two weeks. “We have lots to tell the Indian government, not only about the Sri Lankan government’s attempt to dilute the 13th Amendment, but also [about] what is happening in the North and East and in other parts of Sri Lanka as well,” Mr. Premachandran had told Ceylon Today .
