Three LTTE suspects deported

Three persons — who were recently arrested in Malaysia on charges of trying to revive a network supporting the LTTE, were deported to Sri Lanka on Monday, a senior police official said.

The suspects were currently being interrogated by Sri Lanka’s Terrorism Investigation Department (TID), Police spokesperson Ajith Rohana said. “We suspect they had links with ex-combatants in Sri Lanka, and tried reviving the LTTE,” he told The Hindu on Tuesday.

The Sri Lankan government, over the last few months, has voiced concern over alleged attempts by certain Tamil diaspora networks to revive the rebel Tigers’ movement in the country, five years after its bloody war ended. Early April, the Sri Lankan armed forces shot three persons — who were allegedly involved in regrouping activities of the LTTE — in Vavuniya, when they reportedly tried to escape.
