A U.S. drone attack in Pakistan’s restive North Waziristan tribal district killed at least three suspected militants early on Friday, an intelligence official said.

The strike took place just after midnight (1900 Thursday GMT) in Datta Khel area, about 35 kilometres west of the region’s main town of Miranshah, according to the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“A pair of missiles hit a vehicle shortly after midnight” Wednesday night he said, without providing any further details or the identities of those killed.

Bordering Afghanistan, North Waziristan is considered a hub of al-Qaeda and Taliban-linked militants, making it a frequent target in Washington’s drone campaign.

The strike came days after UN special rapporteur on human rights Ben Emmerson said the US use of drones violated Pakistan’s sovereignty and stoked up radicalism, calling for an immediate halt.
