A group of Taliban fighters attacked a justice department in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, provincial officials said.

“The militants attacked the justice department half an hour ago in Jalalabad city, opening fire at the police guarding the department,” said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, governor spokesman for Nangarhar province.

He said security forces had arrived in the area and that the fighting was ongoing, with no immediate reports of casualties.

A Taliban spokesman and a witness said gunmen had entered the premises and were firing from inside the building.

The Taliban has said it would start its spring offensive on Monday, targeting Afghan and NATO troops as well as civilian government employees.

Elsewhere, two rockets landed at the Kabul international airport early on Monday but caused no casualties, the Interior Ministry said.
