A senior prosecutor handling both the Mumbai terror attacks case and the assassination of the former Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto, was gunned down in the federal capital on Friday morning. Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali was targeted en route to Rawalpindi, where he was going for another hearing in the assassination case.
According to the police, the assailants opened fire on Mr. Ali’s vehicle. He was hit several times. His bodyguard was injured and a lady walking by was killed as the car veered out of control.
Doctors at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences — where the prosecutor of the Federal Investigation Agency was taken — said he was dead on arrival.
No organisation has claimed responsibility for the killing, but police are working on the premise that the attack has something to do with either of the two high-profile cases Mr. Ali was dealing with. Both cases had gained some amount of traction in recent weeks.
This was particularly the case with the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, as the former military dictator, Pervez Musharraf, has now been made part of the investigations.
There were reports that Mr. Ali told the media after the last hearing in the case earlier this week that there was solid evidence connecting the former General to the assassination.
