After a library in the infamous Lal Masjid was named after Osama bin Laden, it is the turn of a mosque in a suburb in the capital to be named after Mumtaz Qadri, sentenced to death for killing Punjab Governor Salman Taseer.
Qadri, who has appealed his sentence, is in jail and on the anniversary of Taseer’s killing there were processions to eulogise him. The naming of the mosque after a murder convict has been defended by its authorities who are raising funds for its expansion. The place was built three years ago in a developing township, but its name was made public on Twitter. The move has been condemned by Taseer’s family but it remains to be seen if the government will take any action.
