Since Thursday the images of a nine-month boy Mohammed Musa crying while being fingerprinted in a case of attacking policemen has put the rather beleaguered justice system and the police in the spotlight. Little Musa was accused of attempted murder along with the rest of his family for attacking a police team with stones while they were trying to recover dues for non- payment of gas bills in Lahore.

When the child and the rest of the family were produced in court last Thursday, the judge suspended the inspector of police who filed the first information report. The police who have suffered ridicule and scorn for this took back the charge of attempted murder against the child on Saturday.

The judge too did not entertain charges against Musa while his grandfather Mohammed Yasin and three others still face trial. News reports said that Yasin accused the police of colluding with the land mafia to file false charges against them of gas theft. The incident took place when the gas connection in Yasin's house was being disconnected.

The police filed a case of attempted murder against the male members of the family including Musa who was carried to court by his grandfather.
