In the first major counter crossover ahead of Sri Lanka’s presidential polls, the opposition United National Party’s general secretary Tissa Attanayake defected to President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s ruling coalition on Monday.

The contest had picked up momentum after two senior Ministers in Mr. Rajapaksa’s Cabinet defected to the joint opposition platform on November 21.
