Nepal’s Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) party, led by veteran communist leader Mohan Baidya Kiran, has split after its secretary, Netra Bikram Chand, announced that he is no longer with the party.
The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist was formed in 2012 after splitting from the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-Ma) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda, which launched a 10-year insurgency. The party came into peaceful politics in 2006 after signing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Mr. Chand said in a press statement that his faction was no longer with the CPN-M as it could not take the lead in revolution of class struggle, Xinhua reported.
“Despite repeated requesst, the party chairman failed to meet our demands,” said Mr. Chand. The Chand-led faction is of the view that there is a need for another round of insurgency in the country.
The faction submitted a paper at a party central committee meeting announcing its separation from the CPN-M.
The other top CPN-Maoist leaders, however, are preparing for reunification with the UCPN-M led by Mr. Prachanda.
