Maldivian Foreign Minister Samad dies

Maldives Foreign Minister Dr. Abdul Samad Abdullah died on Sunday at a Singapore hospital after a brief illness. He was 67.

Mr. Samad, who was receiving treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital after he suffered from a critical kidney ailment, died on Sunday morning.

He was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday after undergoing dialysis. But he was rushed to the hospital hours later after he suffered from heart complications resulting from the dialysis.

Singapore’s Foreign Ministry has expressed its profound sadness on Mr. Samad’s death and extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and the Government of Maldives.

The Ministry said it was working closely with the High Commission of Maldives on the necessary arrangements to send back his body.
