Close on the heels of the abrupt resignation of the Maldives’s Home Minister, Umar Naseer, President Abdulla Yameen on Wednesday reshuffled his Cabinet and made Finance Minister Abdulla Jihad the country’s Vice-President.

Mr. Jihad is the third person to occupy the post in less than a year. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed (November 2013-July 2015) and Ahmed Adheeb (July-November 2015) were his predecessors.

Cabinet reshuffle

The office of Vice-President was lying vacant since the exit of Mr. Adheeb, who was later convicted in two cases and awarded jail for 25 years. Ahmed Munawwar, till now State Minister of Finance and Treasury, has succeeded Mr. Jihad as Cabinet Minister in charge of Finance, while Ahmed Zuhoor, who was earlier looking after Youth and Sports, is now the Home Minister.

Iruthisham Adam, previously Health Minister, will look after Youth and Sports.
