Indian gang-raped in Maldives; action sought

February 14, 2013 03:01 am | Updated 03:38 am IST - COLOMBO:

An agitated group of Indians met a senior official of the Indian High Commission in Male late night on Tuesday and demanded that India take up strongly with the Maldivian government, the case of a young Indian woman who was raped by a gang on Sunday.

“Three persons forced their way into her house and raped her cruelly. She has 12 stitches and has lost a lot of blood. She is not even in a condition to be shifted to Male,” said a member of the India Club, which asked the Indian officials to take action.

The woman, said to be about 24 years, was working as a teacher on the island of Dhangethi in Alif Dhaal Atoll, which has just over 1,000 people.

Like most Indians in the Maldives, she was living in a single-room accommodation.

The attack appeared premeditated and carried out by persons who have watched her movements, said one official.
