Border Guards of Bangladesh and Myanmar exchanged fire on Friday for about an hour.

Earlier, Dhaka lodged a strong protest with Yangon following disappearance of a Bangladesh Border Guard’s personnel on Wednesday.

The exchange of fire took place at Bandarban’s Naikhangchharhi border, said BGB’s local commander Col. Saiful Islam .

Tension built up along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border since Wednesday when Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) opened ‘indiscriminate fire’ at BGB patrol teams at a Rohingya refugee camp. Following the incident, a BGB man was missing.

The issue was taken up by the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka which summoned Myanmar’s ambassador to lodge protest.

Missing person

The Myanmar border police meanwhile informed Bangladesh that they found a body of a Bangladeshi along the border. BGB Director General Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed however said the Myanmar authority is yet to disclose the identities of the person.
