A former Nepalese lawmaker and his two Indian accomplices have been arrested for the alleged murder of a candidate slated to contest the country’s general election next month.
Police said former Unified Marxist-Leninist (UML) lawmaker Ram Chandra Pyasi Kusawaha and two Indians Atik Khan and Raju Shrivastav have been arrested on the charges of murdering CPN-UML leader Mohammad Alam.
Prakash Aryal, a top official of the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police, said preliminary investigation has suggested Mr. Kusawaha is the mastermind of the murder plan. Mr. Kusawaha had served as UML lawmaker in the dissolved Constituent Assembly. Two motorcycle-borne assailants shot Alam in his head from point-blank range at Parwanipur area in Bara district on October 4.
Alam was attacked a day after filing his candidacy under the first-past-the-post electoral system or direct voting from a constituency in southern Bara district.
