Eleven people returning from a pilgrimage died in Nepal on Monday when a passenger bus plunged into a river, police said.

The bus was carrying pilgrims from Pyuthan to Rautahat district in western Nepal. Police said the accident might have occurred when the brakes failed, as the bus veered off the road and nosedived some 100 metres into the Madi River.

Forty others were said to be injured in the accident.
