A Bangladesh war crimes tribunal on Tuesday found David Bergman, a Dhaka-based British journalist, guilty of demeaning the court through a blog post on the country’s Liberation War of 1971.
The three-member International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), headed by Justice Obaidul Hasan, ordered Mr. Bergman to stand in court for the whole day on Tuesday. He was also fined 5,000 taka. The judges of the tribunal also ordered the journalist to stay away from writing on “resolved historical facts.”
Mr. Bergman, at present Editor (special reports) of the Dhaka-based daily New Age , has been asked to pay the fine in the next seven days. Failure to do so will lead to seven days’ imprisonment. Supreme Court lawyer Abul Kalam Azad had filed the contempt petition on February 18. — Haroon Habib
