Dhaka resents U.S. pressure

February 15, 2014 02:10 am | Updated May 18, 2016 08:19 am IST - DHAKA:

Bangladesh has expressed displeasure over U.S. pressure on various issues, including the country’s internal politics.

While the displeasure was aired by many senior ruling party leaders in various forums in the recent times, Finance Minister A.M.A. Muhith on Friday alleged the opposition BNP was making the U.S. commit a ‘mistake’. His reaction came a few days after U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Nisa Desai Biswal warned that the ‘flawed’ elections of January 5 had put ‘strategically important’ Bangladesh at risk of instability.

“This could have serious ramifications for stability in Bangladesh and South Asia,” Ms. Biswal said during the hearing in the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on the current situation in Bangladesh.

The U.S. has been persistently alleging that the Jan. 5 election failed to express ‘the will of the people’.
