Former United States President Jimmy Carter says his Carter Centre will observe the elections for Constituent Assembly in Nepal planned for later this year.

Carter who arrived last week in Nepal to meet political leaders said he was asked by the government and political parties to observe the elections. The Carter Centre observed the last election in 2008 but the assembly failed to complete the task of writing a new constitution.

A government under the chairmanship of the country’s Supreme Court chief justice was formed last month to hold the polls in June but an exact date has not been set.
