Bangladesh Opposition calls blockade

December 31, 2013 01:29 am | Updated May 12, 2016 10:09 am IST - DHAKA:

The Opposition alliance led by Khaleda Zia has called an indefinite nationwide rail, road and waterways blockade from January 1 to force postponement of the January 5 national election.

The new agitation was announced on Monday evening by Khandker Mahbub Hossain, a lawyer-cum adviser to Ms. Zia, after the authorities thwarted her ‘March for Democracy’ with stringent security and other measures.

She called the Dhaka march first for December 29 and extended it till Monday but it could not take off as the capital was virtually cut off from the rest of the country due to withdrawal of all modes of transport.

While no Opposition leader and activist turned out in response to Ms. Zia’s call, she herself was not allowed to come out of her home in Gulshan on ‘security grounds’ by the law enforcers.
