A member of the Afghan Local Police shot dead five of his colleagues on Wednesday in southern Afghanistan, officials said.

Fahim Musazai, the top district official in Gereshk, in the province of Helmand, said the attacker fled the area, taking with him weapons and ammunition.

Mr. Musazai claimed that the assailant was a Taliban infiltrator.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack and said the police officer was “one of our colleagues and joined us.”
