The effect of Cyclone Hudhud was felt in Nepal, with at least 24 killed in mountainous districts on Tuesday night, including an Indian among several foreign trekkers, officials said on Wednesday.
About 80 people — foreign tourists and Nepalis — are still missing, according to reports. Most of those missing had left Manang district for Mustang during the trek, reports said.
Due to inclement weather, rescue operations could only be launched on Wednesday.
In Manang district, five foreigners and three Nepalis were killed, according to Chief District Officer (CDO), Devendra Lamichhane. Although the official identified the nationalities — an Indian and four Canadian tourists — he was unable to give their names and other details.
Officials blamed the blizzards and avalanches on Cyclone Hudhud.
Thousands of tourists visit the Annapurna region every October and November for trekking, when weather conditions are usually favourable for trekking.
