Three NATO soldiers and their Afghan interpreter were killed on Tuesday when a suicide bomber riding a donkey detonated his explosives in eastern Afghanistan, an official said.
Four Afghan soldiers were wounded, said Ataullah Khogyani, the spokesman for the Wardak provincial government.
“The suicide bomber wearing farmer clothes and riding a donkey targeted the Afghan and coalition soldiers at 10:30 am in Sayedabad district, killing three NATO troops and their Afghan interpreter”, he said.
Civilians were killed and wounded in the attack, Mr. Khogyani said, but did not provide details.
NATO confirmed the three soldiers’ deaths, but did not release the victims’ nationalities. Most of the foreign soldiers stationed in eastern Afghanistan are American.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
“In the incident, 14 American and domestic soldiers were killed and a large number were injured”, said the insurgents’ spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.
More than 100 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan this year, according to icasualties.org , an independent website tracking NATO troop casualties.
