South Africa’s finance minister says a new International Monetary Fund leader should come from a developing nation.
Pravin Gordhan said in a Wednesday statement that a leader from a developing nation will reflect the interests of all countries. He says there are several eligible candidates but did not name any.
Former South African finance minister Trevor Manuel has been raised as a possibility.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said IMF leader Dominique Strauss—Kahn “is obviously not in a position to run the IMF” after his weekend arrest on charges of trying to rape a maid in a Manhattan hotel.
Mr. Strauss—Kahn has said nothing about his future at the IMF. He was denied bail and is in a New York jail.
