South Korea’s coast guard found the body of one of nine fishermen whose boat disappeared after helping search for debris and possible survivors from a navy ship that sank a week ago, an official said on Saturday.
The body of one South Korean fisherman was found after contact was lost with the boat late Friday, said coast guard official Lee Kyo—min. The search was continuing for six other South Korean and two Indonesian crew members of the fishing boat.
It was sailing towards fishing grounds after assisting in the search for debris and possible survivors from the 1,200—ton navy ship Cheonan, which sank following an explosion on March 26 during a routine patrol. Fifty-eight crew members, including the captain, were rescued.
No major progress has been made in locating the Cheonan’s 46 missing sailors.
Separately, a funeral ceremony was held for a military diver who died on Tuesday during an attempt to reach sailors possibly trapped in the ship. The vessel broke into two pieces after the explosion. No cause has been determined for the explosion.
