A provincial governor and five other people were killed on Monday when a private helicopter crashed and burst into flames in the Philippines, the military said.

Four of the victims were aboard the aircraft, while two were civilians on the ground, said Colonel Generoso Bolina, a regional military spokesman.

Col. Bolina said it crashed in a residential subdivision in the village of Iyam in Lucena City, 90 kilometres south—east of Manila.

“The helicopter exploded,” he said. “Two houses got burned and two civilians inside the houses were also killed.” The victims included Rafael Nantes, governor of Quezon province who lost in his re—election bid in the May 10 national elections, and two security escorts.

Nantes was on his way to Manila for a meeting with his political party and lawyers to discuss a possible protest against his opponent in the elections.
