At least six suspected asylum seekers have drowned after a boat bound for Australia capsized near Indonesia.

The boat sank soon after it left a port in Central Java.

Indonesian authorities confirmed the death toll and said that the number could go up, Australian news agency AAP reported.

The boat was carrying about 70 asylum seekers who were believed to have travelled to Indonesia from the Middle East.

The Australian government was looking into the matter, the news agency said.
