Singapore’s Changi Airport registered 3.1 million passengers in August, up 1.3 percent over the same period last year, local media reported on Friday.
This is the first increase following nine consecutive months of traffic numbers decline due to the economic downturn, according to local newspaper the Straits Times.
The newspaper said that for the first eight months this year, Changi’s total traffic hit 22.9 million, 5.2 percent lower than the same period last year but a smaller decline than expected.
In February, the airport authority had forecast that the total traffic this year could dip 8.5 percent to 34.7 million, compared to last year.
The airport’s performance is consistent with global air traffic pattern. As countries slowly claw their way out of recession and airlines slash fares to entice customers, many people are being lured to travel again.
