Singapore mourns death of leader's wife

Grief-stricken Singapore on Wednesday said farewell to Kwa Geok Choo (89), wife of the city-state's founder and elder-statesman, Lee Kuan Yew, and mother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Madam Kwa, who died on Saturday, evoked much admiration for her tireless behind-the-scenes support for her husband for more than 60 years.

Better known as Mrs. Lee Kuan Yew, she stayed for most part in the political shadow of her husband, who often acknowledged her intellectual abilities and humane touch.

The country's first family held a private funeral for her. Mourners lined the streets along the route to the funeral site.
