Singapore on Friday expressed deep concern over the sinking of a South Korean warship by a North Korean torpedo, warning that the incident might be a threat for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and also in the region.
Singapore’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that “we have noted with deep concern the report of the investigation,” which concluded that a North Korean torpedo destroyed the South Korean corvette Cheonan on March 26, killing 46 sailors.
“This incident has very serious implications for the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula,” the ministry warned, adding that “it could further complicate an already complex situation and, if mishandled, may destabilise the entire region.” Singapore also commended “the responsibility and restraint” with which South Korea has reacted, urging North Korea and other parties to “show similar restraint and cooperate fully with the international community.”
