Sarkozy’s publicity stunt?

French President Nicolas Sarkozy who claimed on his Facebook page that he was there and had “chipped away” at the Wall on November 9, 1989 found himself embroiled in yet another controversy.

“He was not there on the 9th as he claims,” says Paul Clave, former representative of Mr. Sarkozy’s RPR Party in Germany. “I took the picture and it was on the 10th. Mr. Sarkozy could not have made it to Berlin on time. The news broke late evening and the wall was breached well after 9 p.m.,” he said.

But despite these clarifications, Mr. Sarkozy’s office stuck to its original story — their man had rushed to the Wall in a private plane that very evening in the company of the former Prime Minister, Alain Juppe.

French newspapers began investigating Mr. Sarkozy’s claims and Le Figaro found that on November 9, 1989, Mr. Juppe was in rural France, addressing a meeting of farmers.
