Reshuffle in Myanmar

August 27, 2010 11:25 pm | Updated 11:25 pm IST - Yangon:

Myanmar's junta has undertaken a major military reshuffle ahead of rare elections, said an official said on Friday, without confirming reports that Than Shwe was among those shedding their uniforms.

A total of 15 senior leaders, including the army number three Thura Shwe Mann have retired from their military posts to stand in the November 7 poll — the first held in two decades — said the unnamed official. But he did not confirm earlier reports that General Than Shwe (77) could be among those stepping down from the army, along with deputy Maung Aye. “Thura Shwe Mann and some other generals retired from the military, they will prepare for the elections,” he said.
