A magnitude-5.7 earthquake shook Mexico’s Gulf coast on Friday. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake at 7-07 a.m. (8-07 a.m. EST; 1307 GMT) was centred near the town of Acayucan in Veracruz state, about 189 kilometers southeast of the port of Veracruz, and it was felt even in Mexico City, 470 kilometers to the northwest.

It was relatively deep, about 133 kilometers below the surface and was felt across a wide portion of south-eastern Mexico.

Veracruz state Civil Protection spokeswoman Nohemi Guzman Lagunes said authorities were checking bridges and building for structural damage. The quake did not affect operations at the Laguna Verde nuclear power plant or at oil-production facilities, she said.
