U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday said she hoped Russia’s meeting with the Arab League over the coming weekend would help bring Moscow on board over the Syria conflict.
Calling efforts with Russia “intense,” Ms. Clinton told reporters at the U.S. State Department that she had talked with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier this week “about our hope that Russia will play a constructive role in ending the bloodshed and working toward a political transition in Syria.” She said she would follow up on Monday in New York, when she will see Mr. Lavrov at a high-level discussion in the UN Security Council about developments since the Arab Spring.
Russia has refused to back efforts by western powers to adopt a UN resolution that would call for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to allow humanitarian aid into that country and step aside for a transitional government — a proposal backed by the Arab League. China has also opposed the resolution, but last week appeared to crack open the door somewhat toward changing its position.
More than 7,500 people have died in the conflict that started a year ago, with calls for reform of the Syrian regime. On Friday alone, at least 60 people were killed, activists said, on the eve of a peace mission to Damascus by the United Nations-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.
The US, Britain, France, Morocco and other countries launched another attempt this week to put through a “narrower” resolution in the Security Council, said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.
“We are frankly not overly optimistic that an agreed text will be reached in the future,” she said.
Earlier Friday, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said the draft was “unbalanced” and lacked “simultaneous” appeals to both sides to stop the violence.
Ms. Nuland said that Arab League leaders are concerned enough about the failure of Russia and China to back their efforts that they are beginning to speak openly about “the broader implications for their relations with Russia, their relations with China.” Ms. Nuland said that Syria was the major topic in all US discussions with Russia right now.
“This is now topic one, two and three in our conversation with Moscow,” Ms. Nuland said. “Our concern is for the Syrian people, and it is time for Russia to stand with them.” In a phone call on Friday, Russia’s President-elect Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama agreed to continue discussions on “areas where the United States and Russia have differed,” including Syria and missile defence, according to a White House statement.

A new wave of American Imperialism has started after the 9/11 attacks.
Many countries have suffered greatly from this new imperialism the
last victim being Libya. What is happening in Syria is all
orchestrated by the west, they want to create another ground to launch
a bloody war campaign against a middle eastern country. In between all
these smoke screens and mirrors the USA has already started sending in
special forces (death squads) in Somalia, Sudan, and Congo. The
western media is blatantly lying to the people, about all these
dictators and their so called crimes against humanity, people who live
in glass houses should not throw stones.
The extensive influence over the Anglo-Saxon media by Western establishments has created a reasonable amount of doubt for neutral countries. To complicate the matters further in Syria is the Shia-Sunni rivalry, where the convergence of interest of the allied Sunni factions and their NATO allies has led to serious suspicion of utilizing smoke screens to actualize nefarious agendas. The neutral countries like NAM are concerned regarding the human right abuse but simultaneously they are doubtful regarding the extent of impartiality as well as verity of the coverage. Are these news manufactured collated and disseminated with a purpose or it is just a media appalled on its own reckoning took up the cause without any influence. Truth ,as usual, must be somewhere in between, but the past manipulation of the Western media has rendered it with somewhat a loss of reputation particularly when the matter refers to geopolitical rivalries and the usual suspect is nationalism overrides objectivity
First start the game just to prove its superiority and dominance over
other weak nations, then seeks others' support in these infernal
affairs. The Washington's plans to completely erase the Arab dictators
from the face of The earth are not going to succeed with The Kremlin
in action. If The Washington knows that any kind of talk is not going
to work, what does it want to prove then? Why talk? With Assad out of
regime,Iran as well as Russia will lose a Trustable ally, Why will then
Russia support this now? If talk will fail what will they do next?Of
course what they always do.First Vietnam, then
Afghanistan, Iraq, Tunisia,Egypt,Libya and now Syria.
Hypocrisy at its peak! The US sets a precedent of getting involved in other countries' affairs on completely false pretexts, causes the death of thousands of civilians, loses thousands of its own soldiers based on completely fabricated intelligence, and now expects the rest of the world to support its noble intentions? This is a holler and a hoot and I wonder why the world's media is not seeing the humour of this. What is the USA pressurizing Russia with? Hamburgers?
Election year stunts are nothing new to us in India, or to the people of the USA, but to imagine that self centred politicians in Washington really care about Syria or Libya is a HUGE stretch of the imagination. It's a long time since something sensible came out of USA's foreign policy initiatives.
Secretary Clinton is smarter than that .. she knows the Kremlin is not going to abandon Assad .. it is shameful to see her make useless statements and cower in front of dictators like Assad and Putin .. she is powerless because she refuses to use power against the murderous dictators .. She should not be depending on the Kremlin at all to get rid of dictators .. what she is doing is actually supporting Assad .. why else would she pretend to depend on the Kremlin to stop the murders .. the Kremlin wants the right to do the same thing as it did already in Chechnya .. Clinton should not even be talking to this club of tyrants except to tell them when we will be sending in the drones to Damascus ..
