Fire officials say a fire has gutted a building at the Philippine national penitentiary, killing two inmates.

Fire marshal Roderick Aguto says firefighters found one of the victims on his bed and the other in the hall of the building at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa city, a Manila suburb.

He says the victims were charred beyond recognition and have not yet been identified.

Mr. Aguto says the building housed 925 inmates and all except the two victims were safely evacuated after the fire broke out on Friday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
