Sri Lankan authorities on Wednesday impounded passports of 74 Indians working here, after their visas were found to be invalid.
According to officials of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, Sri Lanka, the 74 persons held a tourist visa but were employed at a plywood company located in Matugama, about 60 kms south of Colombo.
Their passports have been impounded and will be kept until they produce return tickets to India, Controller General of the Department M.N. Ranasinghe told The Hindu .
The company, owned by an India, was registered with Sri Lanka’s Board of Investment. “We will take action against the company for not obtaining the appropriate visas for its employees,” Mr. Ranasinghe said.
