Two massive earthquakes triggered back-to-back tsunami warnings for Indonesia on Wednesday, sending panicked residents fleeing to high ground in cars and on the backs of motorcycles. There were no signs of deadly waves, however, or serious damage, and a watch for much of the Indian Ocean was lifted after a few hours.
Women and children were crying in Aceh province, where memories are still raw of a 2004 tsunami that killed 170,000 people in the province alone. Others screamed “God is great” as they poured from their homes or searched frantically for separated family members.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the first 8.6-magnitude quake was 435 km from Aceh’s provincial capital. The tsunami watch that followed from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii advised countries all along the rim of the Indian Ocean, from Australia and India to as far off as Africa, that a tsunami could be generated.
The only wave, however, was less than 30 inches (80 cm) high, rolling to Indonesia’s coast.
But just as the region was sighing relief, an 8.2-magnitude aftershock hit.
“We just issued another tsunami warning,” Prih Harjadi, from Indonesia’s geophysics agency, told TVOne in a live interview.
Again, the threat quickly passed.
Experts said both quakes were geologically different than the one that spawned the 2004 tsunami, occurring horizontally, with the tectonic plates sliding against each other, creating more of a vibration in the water.
The other type of earthquake, a mega thrust, like the one that also hit off Japan last year, causes the seabed to heave and displaces water vertically, sending towering waves racing toward shores.
Roger Musson, seismologist at the British geological survey who has studied Sumatra’s fault lines, said initially he’d been “fearing the worst.”
“But as soon as I discovered what type of earthquake it was ... I felt a lot better.”
The tremors were felt in neighbouring Malaysia, where high-rise buildings shook. Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh and India also were rattled.
But it was the streets of Aceh where real chaos broke out.
Patients poured out of hospitals, some with drips still attached to their arms. In some places, electricity was briefly cut.
“I was in the shower on the fifth floor of my hotel,” Timbang Pangaribuan told El Shinta radio from the city of Medan. “We all ran out. ... We’re all standing outside now.”
Thailand’s National Disaster Warning Centre issued an evacuation order in six provinces along the country’s west coast, including the tourist destinations of Phuket, Krabi and Phang-Nga.
India’s Tsunami Warning Centre issued a warning for parts of the eastern Andaman and Nicobar islands. In Tamil Nadu in southern India, police cordoned off the beach and used loudspeakers to warn people to leave the area.
The quake was felt in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where many people in the city’s commercial Motijheel district left their offices and homes in panic and ran into the streets. In Male, the capital of the Maldives, buildings were evacuated.
Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.
The giant 9.1-magnitude quake and tsunami on December 26, 2004, killed 230,000 people in about a dozen nations.

@Mr.Kalyan, its life, don't expect too much from it.Get along with your trip and enjoy the life. There are millions of people still living in Indonesia, there is nothing like 100 percent safe in life especially when it comes to nature. Every piece of land, region or country has its own 'natures check point'. Having lived in Indonesia for 8 years, I would just advice you to be always cautious for earthquakes, magnitude 5-6 are very common which don't even bring any reactions with the general public since they are used to them.Since you are upto bali, I would suggest you make a visit to Danau Toba (lake toba) in Sumatra. The world's deadliest volcano below the lake. I feel it holds the key for the so called 'extinction',if at all one happens! the regular seismic activities in recent times is testing its patience, once it goes off, at least half of our so called earth will perish. In spite of all these, I am sure you will love the country and its people, make a visit you will agree with me.
me too felt mild tremors at 1410 for a few seconds in vijayawada. on
experiencing the shake people came out from their house and offices.it
panicked us.

Was taking an afternoon nap when I felt my bed swaying side to side at
around 2:10 pm. It felt pretty scary. I immediately went and told my
cook that I think there is an earthquake. Immediately logged on to
NDTV and there it was - the earthquake news of Banda Aceh.
I was in the US the last time this happened. But this time, actually
sensing the earthquake in Chennai was frightening. Thank God that this
earthquake did not cause tsunami's similar to Dec 2004. We live close
to the beach.
Making Skyscrapers, digging large areas to extract oil and other materials, rise in Earth's temperature are the main cause of earthquake. We are responsible for what happened today and the feature depends on our present action. So from now we should take care of our nature, some small works can stop this kind of disasters.god never saves anyone, only shows a way to find a solution.
oops we are safe! vizag are safe no tsunami no more waves.so Chennai be careful for next attack of Tsunami........have a horrible
night.
Like to know if it is safe to travel to Bali, Indonesia on 19-22 May 2012. As we have planned for a vacation there.
I live in Jakarta, Indonesia. We didn't experience any tremor. I came to know of the earthquake and possible tsunami only from my anxious family members in Madras. Only when I later watched Raj TV news that I was surprised to know of the effect of tremors in India, particularly in Madras. Luckily, there has been no loss of life or damages.
There were tremors felt here in Coimbatore too especially in the Saravanampatti area, people from IT park came out and were in the plain grounds briefly before the tremor stopped.
Don't worry my dear's god save us from tsunami and natural disaster.
Hi The Hindu , actually the Aceh quakes happens exactly on the edges
between Java trench and Indo-Australian plate so these to plates are
convergent plates in this situation the to plates are over lapping on
each other.. This happen very rarely but these causes very drastic
disaster we just experienced in 2004(Sumatra) and 2011 (japan) ..
so our Bay of Bengal cost and indian ocean are on the safe side..
because its not happen in the Sea floor..but always making alertness to
protect people from drastic disaster from next 48hrs
we can't fight with the nature, but we can abide by the words of GOD (living GOD-JESUS)who created you and I & the universe as a whole.
Let us love one another as we love ourself.
Go back to work- everyone!

God is Great.

Its again a reminder for us to update our disaster preparedness. Disaster management authorities should be very sure about their action and readiness in such scenarios.

lets pray aimighty..that no one should get affected...No more stunami god...
I work in Jakarta and the quake being horizontal, travelled to the east and west sides. Jakarta is situated far south of the epicentre and so there was no effect here. Again, being horizontal, there are very less chances of a tsunami. However, there are aftershocks felt in Aceh.
Incase of any severe damage, those who want to give funds to the Affected, please do it yourself and not through any organisation.. Please make sure that the money reaches the poor hands needing it badly..

The earth quake that has struck on Wednesday off the west coast of northern Sumatra in Indonesia has once again thrown challenge to the scientists as well as common man.
