Pakistan on Tuesday expressed shock and anger at the assassination of former President of Afghanistan and Chairman of the Afghan High Peace Council, Syed Burhanuddin Rabbani.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Office on behalf of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, Pakistan condemned the assassination and conveyed to the “brotherly people” and the government of Afghanistan its extreme anger and shock at the terrorist attack.

“Prof. Rabbani was a friend of Pakistan with whom we were working closely within the Afghanistan-Pakistan Joint Commission for Reconciliation and Peace on a vision for peace and prosperity in Afghanistan. Prof. Rabbani has been martyred by the enemies of peace in Afghanistan,” the statement said.
