Pakistan is looking forward to a sustained and result-oriented engagement with India on the basis of “sovereign equality and mutual respect”, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Wednesday.

Mr. Qureshi made the remarks during a meeting with Arab League Secretary General Amre Moussa in Cairo.

Mr. Qureshi said that Pakistan and India should overcome their disputes peacefully for South Asia to realise its development potential.

Pakistan is looking forward to a “sustained and result-oriented engagement with India on the basis of sovereign equality and mutual respect,” he said.

He apprised Mr. Moussa of Pakistan’s “relentless pursuit of peace and prosperity in South Asia,” said a statement issued by the Foreign Office.

Mr. Qureshi also briefed Mr. Moussa about internal developments in Pakistan and said the democratic government had inherited multiple challenges.

“With the support of the people of Pakistan, the government had achieved many successes on different fronts, including achieving a national consensus against terrorism,” he said.

“Pakistan had suffered enormously by this pernicious evil. Nevertheless, eliminating terrorism was the only option,” he added.

The government and people of Pakistan were resolved to defeat this menace with the support of the international community.

Mr. Qureshi also briefed Mr. Moussa about Pakistan’s efforts to achieve peace and stability in Afghanistan and reiterated Islamabad’s full support to an Afghanistan-led reconciliation process.

Mr. Moussa briefed Mr. Qureshi about ongoing talks between Palestinians and Israel and the situation in Sudan.
