One dead, six injured in New Zealand underground explosion

Police communications manager Natalie Swart says the workers were about 13 feet (four meters) below the ground working on a water main when the explosion took place on Saturday morning in the suburb of Onehunga. She said it was unclear what caused the blast.

One worker was dead and six others were injured after an underground explosion rocked a suburb of the New Zealand city of Auckland.

Police communications manager Natalie Swart says the workers were about 13 feet (four meters) below the ground working on a water main when the explosion took place on Saturday morning in the suburb of Onehunga. She said it was unclear what caused the blast.

Ms. Swart said one worker remains in a hospital in critical condition, while a second remains there with serious injuries. The other four injured workers were treated for less serious injuries.
