An official says a fire has killed 14 inmates at a prison in northern Mexico.

The official with the Nuevo Leon state Public Safety Department says the fire swept through the psychiatric wing of the prison in the town of Apodaca.

He says Friday morning’s blaze may have been caused by a short circuit, possibly in a television set.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the fire. He said the blaze was under investigation and could not immediately provide further details.
