The White House on Friday said President Barack Obama will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of next week’s United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.
The sit-down between Mr. Obama and Mr. Netanyahu comes as the Palestinians get ready to ask the U.N. Security Council to accept them as a full member of the United Nations. Israel strongly opposes that effort, and the U.S. has promised to veto the measure.
The U.S. contends that the only way for the Palestinians to truly achieve statehood is through direct negotiations with the Israelis.
The White House said there were currently no plans for Mr. Obama to formally meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
