An Associated Press journalist has seen the dead bodies of more than 30 civilians killed in a retaliatory attack by Nigeria’s military after a bomb attack in the country’s northeast.

The journalist travelled with a government convoy on Monday afternoon through the area pursued by the military and saw corpses lying in the street with no weapons around them. About 50 homes and shops had also been levelled by the soldiers.

A soldier there said the military went in with assault rifles and other weapons in retaliation for a bomb attack nearby on Monday morning that killed a lieutenant. A military spokesman declined to comment about the strike.
