Nepal reels under strike

August 15, 2010 11:35 pm | Updated 11:35 pm IST - Kathmandu

The Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) enforced a nation-wide transport strike on Sunday to pressure political parties to focus on Constitution writing.

Normal life was affected as there was little vehicular movement in Kathmandu valley, other urban centres and on the east-west highway in the Tarai. Many educational facilities were shut down and school students appearing for their supplementary board examinations faced difficulty in reaching their centres.

“Our awareness campaign is meant to highlight that the country's sole agenda has to be constitution writing. The new federal democratic republic Constitution is an opportunity to correct the historic injustices against the indigenous communities,” said Raj Kumar Lekhi, president of NEFIN and a Tharu leader.
