NATO’s leader says the alliance is making contingency plans for military intervention in Libya if it is called on to do so by the U.N. Security Council and other North African nations.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen stresses that the alliance “does not look to intervene in Libya” but wants to be prepared in case action is needed.
He told reporters in Warsaw on Thursday that NATO would only intervene in Libya if three conditions are met - need, support from the region and a legal basis, such as a U.N. Security Council resolution.
He says the Libyan regime’s attacks on its own civilian population “may amount to crimes against humanity.”
Supporters of a no—fly zone over Libya called for a vote on Thursday on a U.N. resolution.
